Man Accused in Bolivar Child’s Beating Death Ruled Unfit to Stand Trial

A man accused in the beating death of his 12-year-old son will be set to a state mental health facility after a judge declared him unfit for trial.

Judge Lisa Henderson ruled that Chad Baker is not mentally stable enough to stand for trial in the slaying of his son on August 16. Baker will be in the custody of state mental health officials for treatment until June 11, 2021, when they will review his case.

Baker is facing charges of first-degree murder, domestic assault, and armed criminal action. Baker is accused of attacking his son outside of a barn near his grandparent’s home.

The boy’s mother died a few years ago.

Investigators say that Chad Baker is schizophrenic and that they’d been called multiple times out of concern for the child’s safety. Relatives of the child said they had called Missouri Children’s Division to lodge concerns.
