An Academy Award and Golden Globe winning songwriter from Springfield has died.
Tom Whitlock died Friday in Tennessee following a long battle with Alzheimer’s disease.
Whitlock was best known for writing the song “Take My Breathe Away,” and co-writing “Danger Zone,” both part of the popular soundtrack for the movie Top Gun.
Whitlock graduated from Glendale High School and moved to California in 1983.
“Take My Breathe Away” won an Academy Award for best original song in 1986.
