Southwest Baptist University in Bolivar says it’s been put on probation by the Higher Learning Commission.
SBU President Dr. Richard Melson says the student degrees, grades and everything related to academics are just fine.
Melson says the probation status is over a concern about the university’s governing documents and its relationship with the Missouri Baptist Convention.
The commission conducted a review of governance conflicts between SBU and the Missouri Baptist Convention. The conflicts go back several years.
The commission will review if the university and its board of trustees have addressed the issues and has given SBU the next 18 months to demonstrate it’s continuing on the right path.
The university remains fully accredited during this probation period.
