The Springfield Police Department put an increase focus on reducing gun crimes in the city this year, and so far it’s working extremely well.
In a report released Thursday, SPD says that so far in 2024 only 21 people have been injured in shootings in Springfield. That, compared to 43 at this same time in 2023, is a more than 50% decrease.
The emphasis on preventing gun-related crimes and shootings began at the end of last year, when the Gun Violence Prevention Collaborative was created to combat increases in gang-related shootings around the area.
The Collaborative includes assistance from Springfield Police, the Greene County Sheriff’s Office, Prosper Springfield, and others.
It’s main focus is on young men aged 13-24 who are at the greatest risk of getting involved in gang activities.
