U.S. Carries Out First Execution of Female Inmate in 68 Years

The United States has executed convicted killer Lisa Montgomery.

Montgomery, who’s from Kansas, received a lethal injection at 1:31 a.m. Wednesday at the federal prison in Terra Haute, Indiana.

She’s the first female inmate to be executed at the federal level since 1953.

Montgomery killed Bobbie Jo Stinnett, 23, in the northwest Missouri town of Skidmore back in 2004, taking the baby from Stinnett’s womb and attempting to pass off the child as her own.

An appeals court granted Montgomery a temporary stay of execution on Tuesday, but the appeals were lifted to pave the way for Wednesday’s execution.
