A new development is bringing more affordable housing and retail space to Springfield’s historic Commercial Street.
City leaders gathered Wednesday to celebrate the opening of Sankofa, a $13.5 million project at 411 West Commercial.
The four-story building features more than 42 apartments, five retail spaces and several amenities, including a fitness room and outdoor patio.
The apartments are aimed at households earning no more than 60 percent of the area’s median income.
Developers say it’s the first new building along Commercial Street in 50 years.
