What We Know: The Missouri State Highway Patrol is asking everyone to celebrate Independence Day safely as thousands of people hit the roads and lakes over the holiday weekend.

The July Fourth holiday enforcement period begins at 6 p.m. Thursday, July 2, and continues through Sunday night.

What It Means: Troopers will be out across Missouri taking part in Operation C.A.R.E. and Operation Dry Water, watching for impaired drivers and boat operators while also helping travelers.

The Patrol is encouraging motorists to buckle up, boaters to wear life jackets and everyone to avoid driving or operating a boat after drinking alcohol. Boaters are also reminded that fireworks cannot be discharged from a vessel.

Last year’s Fourth of July holiday was a busy one. Missouri recorded 993 traffic crashes that killed 13 people and injured 415 others. Troopers also arrested 118 people for driving while intoxicated.

On the water, officers investigated 11 boating crashes, made 13 boating while intoxicated arrests and reported four injuries.

With road construction continuing across the state, travelers are encouraged to check the Missouri Department of Transportation’s Traveler Information Map before leaving home.

What’s Next: Anyone who sees an emergency or suspicious activity can contact the Missouri State Highway Patrol by calling 800-525-5555 or *55 from a cell phone.

Officials say one simple decision—choosing a sober driver or boat operator—can make all the difference in keeping the holiday safe for everyone.
