What We Know: The City of Springfield is asking residents to take a look at proposed changes to its trash and recycling rules and share their thoughts before the plans move forward.
What It Means: The proposed updates to Chapter 94 of the city code are designed to make trash and recycling services easier to understand and more consistent for both residents and waste haulers.
City officials say some of the current rules have not been updated in years.
They also point to a recent waste audit that found nearly half of the material going into the Noble Hill Sanitary Landfill could have been recycled.
People have also asked for better recycling options, improved bulky item pickup and cleaner neighborhoods.
The proposed changes include setting minimum residential service standards, updating requirements for trash haulers, improving information available to customers and making the city code easier to understand.
The recommendations were developed after public meetings, discussions with waste haulers and feedback from community members earlier this year.
What’s Next: Residents can review the proposed changes and submit comments online through Aug. 16. City staff expect to present a final version of the ordinance to the Springfield City Council this fall.
