What We Know: City Utilities of Springfield is about to begin an environmental cleanup on a 4.3 acre site located at 333 N. Main St. roughly adjacent to the Hotel of Terror and the Grant St. bridge. This site is the previous home to a manufactured gas plant that Springfield Gas & Electric operated from the 1870’s to the early 1900’s. The city acquired this property from BNSF Railway this summer.
What’s The Plan?: CU says it’s looking to reduce the environmental impact of the old plant by removing affected soil, removing tar-like coatings, and preparing the property for future use as part of an effort to revitalize the area and improve water quality in Jordan Creek.
This project calls for the removal of 22,000 to 30,000 tons of impacted soil to be replaced with clean topsoil for vegetative growth in some spots and rock surfacing in others.
Pending state approval, the excavation is scheduled to run from late July 2026 to early 2027. The work will take place Monday thru Friday from 7am to 6pm with some saturdays.
Where To Get The Latest: CU is hosting an open house to discuss the project on Monday June 29 from 4pm to 6pm at the Transit Center’s Community Room located at 211 N. Main in Springfield.
