After a long fought battle by the residents of one Springfield neighborhood, demolition has begun on a historic building on Lone Pine Avenue.
Property owner Mitch Jenkins has sought to develop the structure since 2020, but opponents of the project put a stop to any construction with a city ballot issue against rezoning in the area in 2022.
In the years since, the building, which originally included an old travel center, gas station, and hotel, sat vacant.
Last week, Jenkins applied for a demolition permit and was approved for it Wednesday, not giving Galloway neighborhood leaders enough time to save the property by obtaining a historic designation for it.
Demolition of the property began Thursday morning, with Jenkins having until June 27th to complete the job.
