What We Know: One of downtown Springfield’s biggest construction projects is nearing the finish line.
What It Means: Phase One of Renew Jordan Creek is now about 90 to 94 percent complete, with city officials expecting that portion of the project to wrap up by the end of the year.
Work on Phase One started in late 2024. While it is changing the look of downtown, Quality of Place Manager Tim Rosenbury says flood control remains a major part of the project.
The work is also designed to improve water quality and create more public gathering space.
The final phase is a separate part of the project and is still moving forward.
What’s Next: A $3.58 million EPA grant will be used to clean up vacant industrial properties along North Jefferson Avenue. Project leaders say the properties have contaminated soil, while buildings on the site contain asbestos and lead-based paint.
That cleanup will help prepare the area for the next part of the Renew Jordan Creek project.
