What We Know: The Missouri Attorney General says growing complaints from consumers prompted an investigation into former ESPN analyst and Joplin native Matt Miller.
What’s Next: The investigation comes just weeks after ESPN’s Matt Miller was seriously injured in a crash on Missouri Route 96 in Jasper County.
According to the Missouri State Highway Patrol, Miller’s Ford Bronco crossed the center line on June 17 and collided with a semi.
The truck driver was not hurt, but Miller was flown to a hospital. Days later, Miller said on social media that he suffered multiple injuries and underwent the amputation of his left arm.
A GoFundMe campaign created to help with his medical expenses raised more than $51,000. That fundraiser was later paused after complaints began surfacing online.
Attorney General Catherine Hanaway says her office has now received 26 consumer complaints.
Many claim they paid for fantasy football leagues, scouting camps or other services that were never provided or were only partially completed.
What It Means: Hanaway says the investigation is expected to take time because of the number of transactions involved.
She also stressed that the investigation is not focused on Miller’s GoFundMe campaign.
“He did legitimately have this accident, and my heart breaks for his circumstance,” Hanaway said. “We are not specifically investigating the GoFundMe account.”
On July 10, Miller announced on X that he was stepping away indefinitely from ESPN to focus on his recovery while thanking supporters for their prayers.
Authorities have not announced any charges. The investigation remains ongoing.
