What We Know: BMW is recalling more than 29,000 vehicles because of a potential fire risk involving the engine starter.

What It Means: According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, the recall affects several plug-in hybrid models. Included are the 2018-2020 BMW 530e xDrive and 530e iPerformance, the 2017-2019 BMW 740Le xDrive, and the 2016-2018 BMW 330e iPerformance.

What’s Next: BMW will notify affected owners by mail with instructions on how to have the problem repaired.

The company said authorized BMW dealerships will replace the engine starter at no cost to owners.

Until the repair is completed, BMW is advising owners to park their vehicles outside and away from homes, garages and other structures as a precaution against the potential fire hazard.
