What We Know: A former Dallas County sheriff has pleaded guilty to assaulting a FedEx driver during an encounter north of Buffalo.

What It Means: Scott Rice pleaded guilty to fourth-degree assault.

What;s Next: A judge gave him a suspended two-day jail sentence and ordered him to complete anger management classes and community service. Rice must also write an apology letter.

The incident happened in June of 2024, while Rice was serving as sheriff.

Investigators say Rice and the FedEx driver stopped after the mirrors on their vehicles sideswiped each other on a county road.

Video from the delivery truck showed the two arguing before Rice grabbed the driver’s arm. Investigators say Rice identified himself as a law enforcement officer during the encounter.

Authorities previously said Rice’s account of what happened did not match what investigators saw on the surveillance video.
