What We Know: A summer tradition is returning to College of the Ozarks, and it comes with a sweet reward for young visitors.
Throughout July, children ages 12 and younger can receive a free scoop of ice cream at Nettie Marie’s College Creamery by reciting the Pledge of Allegiance from memory.
What It Means: The “I Pledge” program will be offered from 3 to 5 p.m. on July 2, 4, 9, 16, 23 and 30 at The Keeter Center on the College of the Ozarks campus.
College officials say the program is part of the school’s activities leading up to America’s 250th anniversary.
The event encourages children to learn the Pledge of Allegiance while spending time with family during the summer.
What’s Next: Along with the free ice cream promotion, the creamery is serving a limited-edition flavor created for the nation’s upcoming birthday celebration. “America’s Birthday Cake Ice Cream” features cake batter gelato mixed with colorful sprinkles, pieces of cake and blue frosting swirls.
Nettie Marie’s College Creamery is known for its handcrafted ice cream made with milk from the college’s dairy farm.
Organizers say the program has become a popular way to combine a summer treat with a lesson in American traditions.
