What We Know: A federal jury has convicted a man from Springfield of using AI (Artificial Intelligence) to generate obscene images of children and receiving child sexual abuse materials.

On June 2, Jeremy Koppenhaver (46) was found guilty of 1 count of receipt of child pornography and 1 count of production of visual representations of sexual abuse of children in a jury trial that started the previous day. The jury made it’s decision in 50 minutes.

How He Was Caught: According to the U.S. Department of Justice, a customer in a downtown Springfield coffee shop, on June 22, 2024, reported to the Springfield Police that Koppenhaver, who was using the coffee shop’s internet, was trying to use AI to produce child pornography. The FBI and Springfield Police worked together.

Springfield police officers seized Koppenhaver’s lap-top and during a forensic investigation found multiple images of child porn and AI generated obscene images of children. The Department of Justice commented that all the images of child pornography depict real children.

What’s Next: The rapid advancement of AI has made it easier than ever for bad actors to create child sexual abuse material. The problem is increasing yearly in our modern society.

The Justice Department has recently announced that more than 200 child victims of sexual abuse have been located and over 350 child sexual abuse offenders have been arrested nation wide.

That is in one month.
