What We Know: A man serving a life sentence for a deadly downtown Springfield shooting is asking a judge to overturn his murder conviction.
What It Means: Court records show Elysha Bedell filed a motion this week in Greene County Circuit Court, claiming he received ineffective legal representation during his trial.
A jury convicted Bedell of first-degree murder in the November 2023 shooting death of Chaviz Nguyen.
What’s Next: Investigators say Bedell and four others followed Nguyen through Springfield before firing into his vehicle. Nguyen was killed. His pregnant fiancée was also struck by gunfire, but she and the baby survived.
Several co-defendants have already reached plea agreements. Cesar Bolanos was sentenced in June to a total of 35 years in prison. Timothy Hester pleaded guilty in April and is scheduled to be sentenced in November.
The remaining two defendants, Arshaun Bradley and Quartze Washington, are expected back in court later this year.
