What We Know: A man from Springfield will spend seven years in federal prison for attacking a U.S. Postal Service worker who was delivering mail.

What It Means: A federal judge sentenced 45-year-old Courtney J. Ellis to 84 months in prison, followed by three years of supervised release. Ellis pleaded guilty earlier this year to assaulting a postal employee performing official duties.

Investigators say the attack happened in June of 2025 as the postal worker was delivering mail to Ellis’ address.

Ellis struck the worker in the head with a wooden board, then followed him back to his delivery vehicle while yelling and making threats.

Authorities say the victim was wearing a Postal Service uniform and driving a clearly marked USPS vehicle. It was his first time delivering mail along that route.

The U.S. Postal Inspection Service and Springfield Police Department investigated the case.
