Man from Springfield Sentenced in Attempted Catalytic Converter Theft

A man from Springfield has pleaded guilty and been sentenced for trying to steal a catalytic converter last year.

36-year-old Gerald Schmidt was arrested in October of 2021 after police were called for a disturbance at a local business.

Investigators scoured surveillance footage and identified Schmidt as the suspect.

Schmidt was later arrested and charged with felony attempted theft.

After accepting a plea deal from prosecutors last week, Schmidt was sentenced to five years in prison.
