What We Know: A special evening program later this month will give people a chance to experience one of Missouri’s rarest natural landscapes.

What It Means: The Missouri Department of Conservation will host Last Light on Living Landscapes from 5:30 to 8:30 p.m. Thursday, July 30, at Mount Vernon Prairie in Lawrence County.

Participants will meet first at the Springfield Conservation Nature Center before traveling to the prairie.

The guided walk will highlight one of the few remaining pieces of Missouri’s native prairie. Before the state was settled, prairies covered about one-third of Missouri.

Along the way, participants will learn about the importance of native prairie while enjoying wildflowers, tall grasses, birds and other wildlife during the evening hours.

The program is geared toward all ages and is a great opportunity for anyone who enjoys nature, photography or simply spending time outdoors.

What’s Next: Those attending are encouraged to bring water, comfortable walking shoes, binoculars and a camera if they would like to take photos.

Registration is required. More information and a link to register can be found on the Missouri Department of Conservation’s online events calendar.
