A Memorial Day Family Fun mutual aid event was held at Phelps Grove Park Monday to help those facing economic uncertainty.

What We Know: The organizers of the event, Together Across America, gave away gas cards, laundromat cards, city bus passes, clothing, hygiene items, and canned food. The organizers expected about 50 people to come, but were met with a crowd of roughly 200.

What It Means: It was made clear to the organizers that more aid is needed for the community based on the turnout alone. “We need to do this more often as a community,” said Sherry Webb, a volunteer at the event. “The fact that this many people came knowing that we had what they needed makes me sad, but it also makes me proud that my community, the entire community of Springfield, volunteered and donated and made this happen.”
