What We Know: Missouri Attorney General Catherine Hanaway is leading a nationwide effort to keep funding available for crime victims.

What It Means: Hanaway and Louisiana’s attorney general are joining attorneys general from 34 other states in urging Congress to pass legislation that would help stabilize funding for victim services.

That money helps pay for counseling, medical care, temporary housing and other assistance for victims of violent crime.

What’s Next: Hanaway says without action, some programs could face major cuts or even close their doors, especially in rural communities.

The proposal would redirect unused federal funds into the Crime Victims Fund to help keep those services going.
