What We Know: Missouri Senator Josh Hawley is calling on Postmaster General David Steiner to resign unless he agrees to give up performance bonuses until mail service improves for Missourians.
What It Means: Hawley said the demand comes after Steiner responded to criticism over ongoing mail delivery problems by, in Hawley’s view, avoiding responsibility.
Last week, Hawley questioned the postmaster general during a Senate Homeland Security Committee hearing.
Hawley criticized the agency over delayed mail service in Missouri and questioned why bonuses were awarded while delivery issues continue.
Hawley also pointed to reports of a large pile of undelivered mail being dumped in Missouri, saying residents deserve better service and stronger accountability from postal leadership.
The senator said timely and reliable mail delivery should come before executive bonuses.
