What We Know: U.S. Senator Josh Hawley of Missouri is asking the Department of Justice to open a criminal investigation into Plan C, an organization that provides information about abortion pills.
What It Means: In a letter to Acting Attorney General Todd Blanche, Hawley claimed Plan C has helped organize the shipment of the abortion pill mifepristone into states where abortion restrictions are in place. He argued those actions may violate state and federal law.
Hawley also asked the Justice Department to investigate any relationships between Plan C and abortion pill manufacturers, including Danco Laboratories and GenBioPro, as well as other suppliers that may be involved.
In his letter, Hawley said he believes the effort deserves criminal scrutiny and asked the DOJ to examine whether any laws have been broken. He also cited concerns about protecting women’s health and enforcing state laws.
What’s Next: The Justice Department has not announced whether it will open an investigation, and no criminal charges have been filed against Plan C or the companies mentioned in Hawley’s referral.
