Membership in the Southern Baptist denomination dropped last year to its lowest level since 1973, even as it saw increases in baptisms and attendance at services.

Lifeway Research, the denomination’s research affiliates, released the numbers on Tuesday.

Membership fell by 3% to 12.3 million, which continues a two-decade decline.

The drop is attributed in part to church closures and congregations cleaning up their membership rolls.
