Springfield City Council says yes to a new towing ordinance.
Council members voted 5-3 Monday night to approve the ordinance that will give police officers the authority to tow vehicles with missing, invalid, or expired license plates or registration tabs.
The vote came after a lengthy discussion with Police Chief Paul Williams.
Heather Hardinger, Monica Horton and Brandon Jenson voted against the measure.
Several council members and citizens have expressed concern the ordinance would target low-income people who can’t afford registration fees.
Police say there will be an educational period before officers begin enforcing the towing ordinance.
