The City Council looked at a proposal at their meeting Monday that would pause any data center developments in the city for 120 days.

What We Know: The bill was proposed Monday at the Springfield City Council meeting. Springfield City Manager David Cameron explained that the pause would be used to look at potential environmental and economic impacts of data centers.

Cameron stated that data centers were becoming “necessary infrastructure,” but that deciding where and how those developments happen were important discussions to have.

What It Means: Several residents of the city spoke at the meeting in support of the bill and some called for pause to be extended past the 120 days.

Cameron said that the council plans to work with the community to collect feedback on the bill. A vote on the potential pause will be made at a special meeting Monday June 29th.
