A school nurse discovered injuries on a child, leading investigators to document approximately 40 bruises and marks across their body.
Two children were placed in protective custody and a couple from Springfield is now charged with child abuse.
A search of the family’s home revealed unsanitary conditions, including trash, pests, and strong odors, alongside a child-sized bed with metal handcuffs.
The child reported being handcuffed for punishment and at night, as well as being punched and denied food.
The two had a history of abuse and safety investigations. Stass and Dougherty are currently held in Greene County Jail on $10,000 bonds.
