What We Know: More families in Springfield struggling to find housing will soon have a safe place to call home, at least while they get back on their feet.

What It Means: The Kitchen has added 12 new apartment-style units to its emergency shelter on East Chestnut Expressway, nearly doubling its previous 13 units.

Since opening in 2018, the shelter has helped nearly 900 people, about half of them children.

Each unit includes a kitchen, living area, bathroom, and sleeping space, giving families more privacy and a chance to maintain a normal routine.

The Kitchen’s CEO says that privacy is especially important for children experiencing homelessness. She says the goal is to help families build life skills and eventually move into permanent housing.

Families are expected to begin moving into the new units in early November.
