What We Know: With temperatures climbing into the 90s and the heat index feeling even hotter, local health officials are reminding everyone to take precautions and stay cool.
What it Means: The Springfield-Greene County Health Department recommends drinking plenty of water, wearing lightweight clothing, using sunscreen, and taking regular breaks from the heat whenever possible.
What’s Next: If you need a place to cool off, several locations are available across Springfield. Public libraries, along with Springfield-Greene County Park Board family centers and senior centers, serve as cooling centers during heat advisories and extreme heat warnings.
Health officials say young children, older adults, pregnant women, and people with chronic health conditions are especially vulnerable to heat-related illnesses.
They encourage anyone in those groups to stay in air-conditioned spaces and avoid spending too much time outdoors during the hottest part of the day.
