What We Know: Springfield Police and Community Partnership of the Ozarks are teaming up on a new message about firearm safety.
What It Means: The groups have released a public service announcement encouraging gun owners to securely store their firearms. It’s part of the Gun Safety and Violence Reduction Initiative, which is working to reduce firearm-related injuries and deaths in Springfield and across the Ozarks.
Springfield Police Chief Paul Williams says responsible gun ownership includes responsible storage. He says taking a few seconds to secure a firearm could save a life.
What’s Next: Organizers say proper storage can also help keep guns away from children, reduce the chance of firearms being stolen, and prevent access during a moment of crisis.
Free gun locks are available to the public.
Residents can pick one up at the security desk inside any CoxHealth Emergency Department. Locks are also available through many neighborhood associations.
