What We Know: Springfield’s police chief is answering questions about the city’s license plate cameras.

What It Means: Chief Paul Williams says the cameras help police find stolen cars and track down wanted suspects. He also says safeguards protect people’s privacy.

But not everyone is on board.

Protesters gathered outside Wednesday’s briefing, saying the cameras raise privacy concerns and residents should have been allowed to vote on the system.

What’s Next: Police say the public can check how the cameras are used through an online transparency portal.
