What We Know: Springfield Public Schools held the first of two public meetings to discuss the future of its school buildings, and residents still have another chance to weigh in.
What It Means: A new facilities report estimates the district needs about $ 422 million in renovations, including $ 165 million in high-priority repairs.
Deputy Superintendent Doug Van Zyl says many of the district’s buildings are between 50 and 60 years old, and aging systems are becoming more expensive to maintain.
The district is also dealing with declining enrollment, which could affect how it uses its schools in the future.
What’s Next: The district plans a second public meeting to gather more feedback before recommendations go to the school board, possibly in December.
The board is expected to review its options through the spring.
