A strong hail storm that rolled through Springfield Tuesday morning has left damage at Dickerson Park Zoo — and the loss of one animal.
Zookeepers say a 21-year-old emu died during the storm. Another bird, a male rhea, was injured and is now under veterinary care.
A Zoo spokeswoman says no other animals were hurt, and all staff and guests are safe.
The storm moved through the north side of Springfield around 11 a.m., Tuesday.
Heavy hail also caused significant damage to several buildings, including roofs across the zoo.
