According to the Springfield Police Department Daily Media Summary which was released on Monday morning, police officers responded to dozens of incidents during the 4th of July weekend including public disturbances downtown, domestic violence calls and a fatality.
The police handled more than 75 calls on Sunday alone.
What highlighted the police log on Sunday was the high volume of violent offences especially in residential neighborhoods. Officers responded to 13 domestic assault calls across Springfield. This form of violence also spilled into public areas such as The Square and an assault reported at Mercy Hospital on E. Cherokee St.
The volume of calls over the weekend stretched city resources, with everything from assaults to property disputes and serious criminal investigations. In addition, hit-and-run accidents also plagued police.
Domestic Assaults 13, motor vehicle accidents 7, warrant arrests 5, theft and shoplifting 5, false alarms 11… all in one day.
We applaud our police and all the work they’ve done, and do, as well as all the emergency responders.
This 4th of July weekend would have been much different without them.
