What We Know: Amazon is giving thousands of workers a raise just ahead of the busy holiday shopping season.
The company says it is increasing the minimum starting wage for its full-time U.S. operations workers to $20 an hour.
What It Means: That’s a $1-an-hour increase for employees who do jobs like packing and shipping orders. Amazon says average pay for those workers will now be nearly $24 an hour.
The raises take effect Sept. 27.
What’s Next: Amazon is also adding new employee discounts on groceries and everyday items beginning Oct. 1, including purchases through Amazon and Whole Foods.
The company says its average total compensation for full-time operations workers, including benefits, will now top $32 an hour.
