Amebic Brain Infection Confirmed in Missouri

The Missouri Department of Health and Senior Services has confirmed the first case of a rare brain infection in 35 years.

According to a news release, a patient was diagnosed with amebic meingoencephalitis or P-A-M.

It is cause by inhaling an ameba through the nose while swimming in body of warm freshwater.

The last case diagnosed in Missouri was in 1987.

The Department of Health would not release the location of the patient, but said they were in intensive care at a Missouri hospital.
