Amendment 3, which will put the constitutional right to abortion into Missouri law, is now projecting to pass.
The hotly-debated amendment will ensure that the right to abortion remains in the state, and replace a ban that had previously been put into place several years ago.
Missouri became the first state in the U.S. with an abortion ban shortly after Roe v. Wade was overturned by the Supreme Court in 2022.
In a statement after the announcement, newly re-elected Congressman Mark Alford said:
“The passage of Amendment 3 is a heart-wrenching loss for the many of us who cherish and value human life. The shamefully deceptive practices used by out-of-state Progressive Democrats to shove this measure forward are outrageous and unacceptable.
“It will make Missouri more like New York and California, allowing abortions at any point during pregnancy and stripping away parental rights. By passing this dangerous amendment, we’ve denied the unborn their most fundamental right — to experience life.
“We fought tirelessly alongside leaders like Melissa Ohden and Lamar Hunt, Jr., to uphold the value and dignity of life, and to affirm and protect both the mother and the child. We want to thank the efforts of so many who worked to oppose Amendment 3.
“As we look ahead, we remain committed to supporting life-affirming care for both the mother and the baby that God is growing inside her. We believe that life is precious, and we will continue to champion policies that reflect this conviction.”
The new amendment will allow for the right to an abortion, under any circumstance, up until the point of fetal liability.
Current Missouri law has a near total ban on abortion, with the only exception being if a woman’s life was in immediate danger.
This news comes as states like Florida voted down amendments and provisions to restore abortion rights in other conservative-stronghold states across America.
