Missouri lawmakers are considering legislation to combat catalytic converter thefts.

House Bill 2276 would require scrap metal buyers to verify that anyone trying to sell them a detached catalytic converter got it legally.

Under the bill, anyone who knowingly buys or obtains a stolen catalytic converter could face a class E felony charge.

The bill would also enable the Department of Revenue to create a website to report records of catalytic converters.
