Details Emerge in Shooting, Killing of Teenager from Springfield

Springfield Police are discovering more about what led up to a shooting that killed a teenager.

Investigators say Nikolai Janes shot and killed 19-year-old Keontae Tureaud on July 1.

According to police statements, Janes and Tureaud, as well as several others, were smoking marijuana and playing with the gone. They believed it was unloaded.

Following a playful struggle, Janes took the gun from Tureaud, pointed it at the back of Tureaud’s head and pulled the trigger.

The gun went off, shooting Tureaud in the head.

Those at the scene called 911 and Tureaud was rushed to an area hospital, where he later died of his injuries.

Janes is charged with second-degree assault and armed criminal action. He has not been scheduled for a court appearance at this time.
