Juneteenth Closes Federal Offices

All non-essential federal offices are closed on this Juneteenth holiday, and most banks are shut down.

There is no mail delivery from the US Postal Service, and there is no trading on Wall Street. Juneteenth commemorates the end of slavery in the United States.

It marks the day in 1865 when the country’s last enslaved people in Galveston, Texas were informed that they were freed under the Emancipation Proclamation.
