A man from Topeka is in custody in Springfield after allegedly shooting and killing an infant in Kansas.

29-year-old Alfred Smith was arrested in Springfield Thursday, July 20, and is being held in the Greene County Jail.

Investigators say Smith went to an apartment in Topeka to visit Toyana Taylor-Adams and their son, two-month-old Alonzoe on the night of July 14th.

Taylor-Adams says she hadn’t seen him since he abandoned her and the baby a few days after he was born.

She stepped outside the apartment to call relatives to let them know Smith was visiting when she heard a gunshot.

When Taylor-Adams came back up the stairs, she was met by Smith, holding the baby in his arms with blood on him and the child.

A GoFundMe page has been set up for Alonzoe’s funeral services.

Prosecutors say Smith is being held without bond due to him crossing state lines as a fugitive.

The details of his charges have not been released at this time.
