Man from West Plains Pleads Guilty in Case Surrounding Drowning Death of an Infant

A man from West Plains will be sentenced later this month for his role in the death of an infant in an apparent drowning.

Investigators say police were called to the home on August 9, 2022 where they found a six-month old girl unresponsive.

28-year-old Levi Coffel talked with authorities at the scene, in which he admitted that the child had been left alone in the bathtub “for a few minutes”.

He told officers when he went back into the bathroom, she was submerged in the bathtub.

According to the police report, officers smelled alcohol and elected to take Coffel into custody. He willingly submitted to a breathalyzer test, which came back showing Coffel having a blood-alcohol content (BAC) of .191.

He pleaded guilty to a charge of second-degree involuntary manslaughter. Coffel is now scheduled for sentencing on September 23.
