Missouri Broadcasters Association Files Lawsuit Against Court Redaction Law

The Missouri Broadcasters Association, two lawyers and a journalist filed a lawsuit in Cole County Circuit Court seeking to invalidate court redaction requirements.

The lawsuit has to do with a provision slipped into a larger bill at the end of the 2023 legislative session which requires attorneys and court personnel to redact the names of witnesses and victims from court documents.

The statue was not debated on the floor of either chamber of the General Assembly.

The petition argues that the statute violates both the U-S and Missouri Constitutions.
