Next time you fill up for gas, remember to save your receipts for a refund on gas tax!
That’s right, a window has just opened for Missouri drivers to apply for refunds on state gas taxes, with refunds of 12.5 cents per gallon as of July 1, 2025.
In 2021, Missouri started an escalating fuel tax to generate up to $1.8 billion for road repairs, with taxes maxing out at 29.5 cents per gallon on July 1.
However, not many drivers have applied for a refund, with some not realizing that a refund was available and others saying that they knew about it, but it wasn’t worth the required paperwork.
The refund requires you to keep your fuel receipts between July 1 and June 30, then apply for a refund for the prior 12 months between July 1 and September 30.
Then the refund form, Missouri Form 4923-H, requires drivers to log the date gas was purchased, the seller’s name, address and the exact gallons purchased.
The program also excludes vehicles that weigh over 26,000 pounds, excluding most semi-trucks.
Original budget estimates projected that 20% of fuel tax revenue would be refunded, but as of now, less than 1% of the 4 million Missouri drivers have claimed their refunds since 2022.
