What We Know: The city of Monett is trying again to give voters a chance to change how their city government works.
What It Means: An effort to form a charter commission was supposed to go before voters this past April, but the election was canceled after only 11 people signed up to run. State law required at least 13 candidates. Mayor Randy Burke says the short timeline was part of the problem.
What’s Next: Now, the city is starting earlier. In April 2027, voters will be asked whether they want a 13-member commission to write a city charter. They’ll also choose the people who would serve on that commission. If a charter is written, voters would get the final say on it in April 2028.
Monett currently operates under a commission form of government with a mayor and two commissioners. Burke says a charter could give the city more flexibility as Monett continues to grow.
The city is holding another candidate workshop today at 2 p.m. at the Monett City Park Casino. It’s aimed at people interested in serving on the charter commission, but residents can also learn more about the process.
