Officials in Springfield Approve New Hiring Incentives for Police Department

City leaders in Springfield now have added incentives to attract and retain officers for the Springfield Police Department.

On Monday, the incentive was approved for SPD to begin using as a recruiting tool.

The incentives include:

• $5,000 signing bonus for new recruits
• $10,000 for officers coming from another department
• $2,500 per year in student loan reimbursement for up to five years, not exceeding $12,500

Officials with the department are hoping it will help them fill some of the 50 open positions that are currently available.
