Missouri Senator Josh Hawley wants to stop data centers from receiving certain federal tax breaks.
Hawley introduced the No Tax Breaks for Data Centers Act Thursday. It would prevent data centers from qualifying for tax benefits through the federal Opportunity Zone program.
The program was created in 2017 to encourage investment in lower-income communities.
Hawley argues large technology companies are using the program to help finance data center projects and says those tax breaks weren’t intended for them.
The bill would remove data centers from the program while leaving the tax incentives in place for other qualifying businesses and properties.
