What We Know: Springfield City Utilities is getting some extra help replacing hundreds of aging utility poles across the city.

What It Means: CU received a $3 million grant from the Missouri Department of Natural Resources. The money will be used to replace utility poles and transformers.

Many of those poles are getting close to 50 years old, which is around the time CU likes to begin replacing them.

What’s Next: Communications Manager Jamie Presley says the grant will allow CU to replace more than 500 additional poles over the next four years.

That’s on top of about $10 million CU already plans to spend this year on pole replacement and tree trimming.
