The city of Springfield says leaders are deeply saddened by the death of a worker Monday in an accident at the Springfield Noble Hill Sanitary Landfill.

A news release says the employee, identified as Larry Flett, 62, died when the articulating dump truck he was driving flipped over and caught fire.

Flett had worked as a solid waste operations associate at the landfill for nearly two years, and previously served as a Springfield police officer for nine years (1989-1998).

“This is a tragic day for the city of Springfield,” Interim City Manager Collin Quigley said in the release. “We are are deeply saddened by this death of one of our own and send our sympathies to the Larry Flett family and coworkers. He was an integral part of our team and his loss will be felt,” Quigley said.

The Department of Environmental Services, who oversees the landfill, will do an internal review of the incident.

The landfill, located at 3545 West Farm Road 34, is expected to remain closed on Tuesday.
